Memorandum to the General Council of Urantia Brotherhood

Re: Elder's memo of August 4, 1989

August 23, 1989

Dear David:

Thank you for your memorandum and questions. We share your desire for open and honest communication within the context of the respective responsibilities and prerogatives of our two unique and different organizations. while we may not always be able to answer your questions to the degree you might wish, writing is a productive way in which to bring your concerns to the attention of the Trustees.

With respect to your first question, certainly no slight was meant either to Berkeley or to you inasmuch as Martin's travel to Estonia was on Foundation business. Martin and others met with some Estonians who are interested in The Urantia Book and the possibility of an Estonian translation.

With regard to the mailing list, there appears to be a difference of opinion as to how the situation developed. It was our understanding that you had agreed to notify the officers. We certainly meant no discourtesy to you or anyone else. Moreover, as you know, C.U.B.S. was attempting to invalidate the rights in the Urantia marks, so that unworthy as well worthy organizations could use them in any way for any purpose they chose. Therefore, C.U.B.S.' charges, although unfounded, posed a serious risk to the work of Urantia Foundation, Urantia Brotherhood and Urantia Societies, and it was the responsibility of everyone who supports any of these organizations to take all necessary action to defeat those claims. Urantia Foundation's attorneys concluded that it was advisable to conduct a survey in order to assure that the meritless claim of C.U.B.S. would not prevail. Furthermore, contrary to the June 7, 1989, letter of the Denver Society, there was no harmful intent or incrimination associated with the survey. Thus there could be no legitimate basis for any member of our respective organizations to object to the mailing list being used in connection with the survey.

The Trustees plan to provide an appropriate announcement of the resolution of the C.U.B.S. litigation in due course.

We likewise plan formally to announce in the near future the election of two new Trustees. Richard Keeler was elected a Trustee on July 15, 1989, and Neal Waldrop was elected on August 19, 1989. We have no set practice for the announcement of the election of Trustees, save perhaps in our newsletter, which is scheduled to come out shortly.

Thank you again for your concerns.

The Trustees of Urantia Foundation
